About Nevada Legacy Corps
Founded in July 2003, the Nevada Legacy Corps (NLC) is the newest caregiver support program of the Nevada Rural Counties Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, Inc. (RSVP). The NLC currently has 36 member/volunteers who each provide between 400 to 450 hours of respite and caregiver support services to our clients each year.
Prior to the creation of NLC, there was no volunteer respite program in rural Nevada. For area caregivers, the geographic isolation, combined with a high percentage of the younger population moving out of the region and a senior population growing at an all-time national high, created a serious reduction in the pool of potential volunteer caregivers.
The goal of NLC is to be proactive in the development of a new program of civic engagement focused on recruiting the Baby Boomer Generation as volunteers prior to or early in their retirement. NLC recognizes the Boomers' unique abilities in varied fields, as well as their desire to be involved in civic change that brings direct relief to their fellow Nevadans in need of help.
Another key ingredient to the unprecedented success of the NLC program is the invigorating influx of youth and young adults who have joined the Corps. The unique multigenerational and multicultural make-up of the NLC and it extensive pre-service and in-service training programs allowed us to provide over 75 families and 110 caregivers with approximately 7,500 hours of respite during our first year.
The Corps' highly trained members have significantly impacted Nevada's rural senior and disabled population by helping families avoid premature institutionalization of their loved ones, thereby allaying the terrible fear of the elderly and afflicted that they will not be able to remain in their own homes where their possessions, family and memories all help alleviate their condition.
The NLC serves all age groups and cultures. Our clients include those suffering from such diverse disorders as Alzheimer's, Dementia, Post Stroke, Parkinson's disease, Attention-Deficit Disorder, Multiple Sclerosis, Cancer, Head Injuries, seizure disorders and heart problems.
We at the Corps are proud that our respite work has earned our organization several awards and honors, including the Senior Service Network's Communities Service Organization of the Year; the University of Maryland's Most Innovative Start-up Program of the Year; the University of Maryland's Superior Sustainability Development Award; and the American Public Health Association and the U.S. Department of Public Health: Archstone Foundation Award.
We have also received the University of Nevada Sanford Center on Aging, Sanford Star Award; the Carson City "Point In Time" Homeless Count Appreciation Certificate; the 2005 National Senior Health and Fitness Day Participant Certificate; and three Lifetime Achievement Presidential Volunteer Services Awards.
